Curriculum Structure

At St Anthony’s School, we have a vibrant and rigorous curriculum which is based on the Chris Quigley Skills document. Each new theme the children embark on is launched with excitement, and celebrated at the end. Theme days, educational visits and visitors all form part of our curriculum, to help bring it to life. OfSTED inspectors described our curriculum on their last visit:“By being encouraged to draw their own conclusions through discussion in an atmosphere of fun, pupils develop their already high levels of articulate reasoning skills further. Cross-curricular links enhance learning.”- OfSTED 2011. The curriculum is regularly reviewed to ensure that it is appropriate to the needs and abilities of the pupils. Progression is constantly monitored. Our balanced, broad-based curriculum promotes the spiritual, moral, mental and physical development of each child, and helps to prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.

Our Literacy and Numeracy curriculum is academically challenging whilst being appropriate to every child's individual needs. It based on the Literacy and Numeracy strategy, but linked to the class theme where appropriate. Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 use the Read, Write Inc programme to build children’s reading and writing skills, which has been hugely successful in our school. As they progress through the School, children are expected to work with greater independence, applying all their knowledge and skills to their work.

To find out more detailed information about what units of work the children are covering, please take a look at our Curriculum Chronicles (link at the bottom of the page).

We use the Read Write Inc phonics and reading scheme. We supplement the Read Write Inc reading scheme with the Oxford Tree Reading scheme to ensure children are reading a variety of books.
