RSE (Relationships and Sex Education)

St Anthony's is a Catholic primary school that seeks to appreciate and develop the talents and skills of each individual in our community and beyond. Inspired by the life of Christ and his teachings, good relationships are fundamental to our Catholic ethos and RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) is a cornerstone of our faith based curriculum. Our objectives for our RSE curriculum are to promote lifelong learning about relationships, emotions, looking after ourselves, and supporting our children through their physical, emotional and moral development. This involves acquiring information, developing skills and forming positive beliefs, values and attitudes which will prepare our children for their futures and enable them to confidently take up the challenge of the Gospel in today’s world.   RSE has a key part to play in the personal, social, moral and spiritual development of our young people and is encompassed in our PDL (Personal Development Learning) curriculum.

The aims of Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) at our school are to:

Provide a safe framework in which sensitive discussions can take place.
Appreciate the dignity and worth of each individual, all of whom are created in God’s image and likeness (Genesis 1:26-27).
Teach children the correct vocabulary to describe themselves and their bodies.
Develop confidence in talking about feelings and relationships.
Help children develop feelings of self-respect, confidence and empathy.
Have the confidence and self-esteem to value themselves and others.
Prepare children for puberty, and give them an understanding of sexual development and the importance of health and hygiene.
Create a positive culture around issues of relationships and sexuality within the framework of our Catholic values.
Understand about the diverse range of different relationships, and their importance for the care and support of children and families.
Behave responsibly within relationships and to know and understand the Catholic Church’s teachings of marriage and love.
Be able to recognise unsafe situations and be able to protect themselves and ask for help and support.
Understand the role of the media in forming attitudes, both positive and negative.
Understand that offence can be caused by the use of sexual terms as an insult.
